AMES, Iowa – A pair of Cyclones were named to All-Region teams, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) announced Thursday afternoon. Mikayla Ramos received second-team recognition as a designated player while Carli Spelhaug was tabbed a third-team outfield selection.
Ramos and Spelhaug each make their second-straight appearance on an All-Region team. This marks the 10th consecutive season ISU has had a representative on the team.
An All-Big 12 Second Team member, Ramos put together a stand-out season at the plate, hitting .301 with 14 home runs, 10 doubles, a triple and 53 RBIs. Ramos' 53 RBIs rank 27th in the country this season and are the third most in a season in program history. She became the only Cyclone to record two seasons of 50-plus RBIs in her career. The senior's 14 home runs are tied for the third most in a season in school history and rank fourth in the Big 12 this season. Ramos also registered six sacrifice flies on the year, the sixth-most nationally.
Spelhaug was dependable from the lead-off spot for the Cyclones, averaging .313 with 12 doubles, three triples, six home runs and 19 RBIs during the regular season. The speedster stole 15 bases on 16 attempts, the 10th most in program history. Her .977 career stolen base percentage is tied for the second best among active Division I players. The Bettendorf, Iowa native scored 52 runs which were fifth in the Big 12 and tied her total form last year for the third most in a season in program history. She averaged 1.02 runs per game, the 21st-best mark in the nation.
Spelhaug was also an All-Big 12 Second Team selection and a CoSIDA All-District First Team member.
NFCA member head coaches from each respective region nominated student-athletes and voted for the teams. All awarded student-athletes now become eligible for the 2022 NFCA Division I All-America squads. The NFCA Division I All-America teams, voted on by the NFCA DI All-American Committee, will be announced on Wednesday, June 1.
