AMES, Iowa – Iowa State incoming freshman Shantavia Dawkins will get international basketball experience under her belt before arriving in Ames, as she will represent her native Canada as a member of the U18 Women's National Team at the FIBA U18 Women's Americas Championship 2022 in Buenos Airies, Argentina.
The group stage for Dawkins and Canada begins today against Mexico at 4 p.m. Central Time, followed by group games against Brazil on Tuesday at 4 p.m. and hosts Argentina at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. All games from the tournament will be streamed for free on the FIBA YouTube channel.
Along with a continental age group title, Dawkins and the Canadians will be looking to be one of the top-four teams in the tournament, as that will earn them passage to the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup 2023, which will be held in Madrid, Spain next summer.
Dawkins and the Canadian team had a training camp at Humber College over the last two weeks before arriving in Argentina on June 9.
Dawkins wrapped up her high school career this year by helping Southwest Academy of Brampton, Ontario to a 32-10 record and a trip to the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association Final 8. Individually, Dawkins averaged 14.2 points per game and was selected to the BioSteel All-Canadian Games in April, an event that showcases the best high school players in Canada.
