AMES, Iowa – Sisters Carli and Ellie Spelhaug, as well as senior outfielder Lea Nelson, have earned Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Communicators (CSC).
Carli Spelhaug found herself playing both infield and outfield as well as batting up and down the lineup for the Cyclones in 2023. Spelhaug slashed .248/.504.378 for Iowa State, recording a conference-high four triples and seven home runs as part of her 35 hits on the season. Spelhaug also led the Cyclones in stolen bases, as the Bettendorf senior nabbed 13.
Her sister, Ellie, had a consistent season in the circle as Iowa State's primary arm. Spelhaug pitched a team-high 108.1 innings and held a 4.01 ERA. She led the team in wins (8-8) and made a team-high 38 appearances on the year. Ellie held her opposing batters to a .278 batting average.
Senior Lea Nelson made appearances in 32 contests for the Cyclones, starting one. The Davenport native was used prominently used as the primary pinch runner for the Cyclones. Nelson did, however, get her fair share of cuts in at the plate. She recorded four hits in 15 at-bats, including her first career home run against No. 1 Oklahoma.
In the classroom, Ellie is a Linguistics major, her sister Carli is a Kinesiology and Health major and Nelson is a Journalism and Mass Communication major.
The 2023 Academic All-District Softball Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom.
CSC Academic All-District honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot. First-, second and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be voted on and announced June 6.
