IRVING, Texas – Junior outfielder Milaysia Ochoa has been named to the All-Big 12 Second Team, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Ochoa, a Chino, Calif. native, led Iowa State in most offensive categories as she was the lone Cyclone to start all 53 games on the season. Ochoa slashed .317/.615/.400, leading the team in all three departments. She notched 51 hits in 161 at-bats, scored 41 runs and tallied a team-high 32 RBI.
Ochoa had a team-high 24 extra-base hits on the year, recording 12 doubles and 12 home runs – the seventh most in a single season in program history. Ochoa also cracked multiple other top ten categories during her breakout season as she now owns the third most doubles (38) in school history as well as the eighth most RBI (108).
After spending her first two seasons as the Cyclones' primary right fielder, Ochoa shifted to center field for her junior year. There, she was able to showcase her tremendous range and cannon of an arm, making multiple diving catches and throwing out runners from the outfield.
Milaysia began the season batting in the middle of the lineup, fluctuating between the third and eighth spot before earning the leadoff job in March. The move from the middle of the order to the top played a major role in Ochoa's offensive production.
This is the second recognition Ochoa has earned from the Big 12 during her three-year career with the Cyclones, having been named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team in 2021. In 2021, Milaysia was also named to the NFCA All-Midwest Region Third Team thanks to her rookie campaign.
This is the third-straight season the Cyclones have had a player named to the All-Big 12 Second Team, as Ochoa joins teammates Carli Spelhaug (2022) and Mikayla Ramos (2021, 2022) as recipients of the All-Big 12 Second Team honor.
Iowa State is back in action this week in the Big 12 Championship in Oklahoma City. The Cyclones are the No. 5 seed and will open tournament play against the No. 4 seed Baylor Bears on Thursday, May 11, at 10 a.m.
