AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (2-0, 0-0 Big 12) swept DePaul (0-2, 0-0 Big East) by set scores of 25-8, 25-15, 25-23 to take the crown at the Cardinal and Gold Challenge. The Cyclones hit at .330 through the match, the second-straight match hitting over .300, while holding DePaul to an efficiency of just .027.
Lilly Wachholz lit up the match with 11 kills (.500 hitting), three blocks and three digs. Nayeli Gonzalez had her second-straight double figure match with 11 kills, nearly notching a double-double with nine digs to go along with three blocks. Pam McCune and Jordan Hopp led the defense as the duo totaled six blocks each, while ISU totaled 12 through the three sets.
Setter Morgan Brandt had her second-straight 30-plus assist match and showed she can do it all totaling 32 assists, seven digs, four kills and four blocks.
SET ONE
Gonzalez fired off the kill to begin the match while the Cyclones held the lead throughout. ISU hit scoring runs including one of eight straight to reach 20 points while Depaul held five. The Cyclones held DePaul to a hitting percentage of -.229 while ISU hit at .579 to cruise through the first and end ahead 25-8.
SET TWO
DePaul took the lead before Wachholz put down the kill to tie it at 4-4 and aid in the Cyclones taking the next four to retake the lead at 7-4. Iowa State and DePaul kept within three at 13-11 before the Cyclones began to stretch a lead while Wachholz hit three-straight kills to run ahead 21-13. Iowa State would only allow two more DePaul points to follow as ISU took the second by a score of 25-15.
SET THREE
DePaul began with the lead of 14-11 before a kill by McCune fired up the home team as the Cyclones went on to tie it at 14. Another tie was seen at 16s until Brandt and Hopp combined for the block to give ISU the lead. The set continued to be a battle as the two sides kept within three. The Cyclones then found match point after back-to-back Wachholz kills while DePaul fought off the end of the match three times. Another slam by Wachholz gave ISU the victory in straight sets.

Iowa State next takes on the first road test with the GCU Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz. ISU first meets future Big 12 opponent Arizona September 1 before meeting Long Island and GCU September 2.
