Morgantown, W.Va. – No. 25 Iowa State (10-2, 0-0 Big 12) swept West Virginia by set scores of 25-17, 25-20, 25-19 to seal the conference-opening victory Thursday night.
ISU swept its third-straight opponent and totaled the sixth sweep of the season. The Cyclones hit efficiently at .324 while holding WVU to .130 through the night. It is the fourth match of 2023 for Iowa State to hit over .300.
The victory goes down as Christy Johnson-Lynch's 193rd Big 12 victory to break the tie and hold the fifth-most coaching victories in league history outright.
Sophomore setter Morgan Brandt also hit a milestone, breaking over 1,000 career assists. Brandt entered the match 28 away from the mark and brought in 29 over the three sets, becoming the 17th in ISU history to hit 1,000.
Lilly Wachholz extended her 10-plus kill streak to three matches with 12 kills at .333 hitting. Maya Duckworth was the second Cyclone in double figures, totaling 10 at .269 while coming one dig shy of a double-double.
The Cyclone defense shines as Jordan Hopp led the match with four blocks. Brooke Stonestreet put up a match-leading 17 digs, passing 800 on her career to now hold 812.
SET ONE
The Cyclones took a lead of 8-3 after Duckworth's second kill in the opening frame. The Mountaineers would come within two of ISU's lead at 11-9, but Iowa State followed to take a 6-2 run to go up by six (17-11). Brandt then deceived the Mountaineers with the setter kill to put things at 22-15 while Wachholz would notch her fourth kill on eight swings to bring ISU to set point. Wachholz fifth slam would end the set with ISU ahead 25-17 as the team hit at .333.
SET TWO
WVU held the lead of 9-6 to begin, while Pam McCune made it 9-8 on her fourth kill of the set alone. The set would be brought to a tie at 10s while Duckworth sent the kill over to give the Cyclones their first lead of the set. ISU kept it rolling taking seven straight with Stonestreet at the service line, recording an ace to make it 16-10. ISU kept hold of the lead, going up 2-0 in the match after again hitting over .300 in the set.
SET THREE
Wachholz 10th kill brought the third to a score of 4-4, before the redshirt freshman tacked on another to go up 7-5. The Cyclones then hit a 4-0 run including two blocks and a kill to lead 15-9. Duckworth would go on to join Wachholz in double figures to extend the advantage to 20-14. The match would end at 25-19 to seal the victory.
