CORALVILLE, Iowa – Iowa State (6-0, 0-0 Big 12) downed Iowa (4-3, 0-0 Big 10) in five sets (24-26, 17-25, 26-24, 25-18, 15-9) Wednesday night, sealing the first victory on the Hawkeye's home court since 2019 to remain undefeated on the season.
The Cyclones showed grit coming back after being down 0-2, storming ahead in the third set to reverse sweep the Hawkeyes. Iowa State put up nine blocks and hit over .300 in sets three through five, including at .429 in the fifth.
Iowa State had four in double figures, led by Jordan Hopp with 14 at an elite .364 while totaling five blocks. Maya Duckworth hit at .300, totaling 13 along with six digs and three blocks. Kiersten Schmitt had 10 kills at a career-high .444 while Annie Hatch also brought in 10 to go along with seven digs and two blocks.
Morgan Brandt dialed in 49 assists, matching her career high, while solidifying her fourth double-double of the season with 11 digs. Brandt also had a career high in kills with five, achieving the total on just 11 attempts (.455).
Brooke Stonestreet was crucial in the victory, totaling 20 digs to notch her second 20-plus dig performance this season.
SET ONE
The match began with the Cyclones setting out on a 10-1 scoring run to lead 12-6 before Iowa came back to knot things up. The two sides continued to even the score with six ties while Nayeli Gonzalez showed her dominance, bringing in her sixth kill while hitting at .400 as the Cyclones went up 19-18. At 23-23, a kill by Hatch brought ISU to set point, but Iowa fought back finding their way to set point and taking the set 26-24.
SET TWO
Gonzalez brought in her third ace to begin the second frame and make the score 2-2. ISU and Iowa followed to remain within two points of each other up until a tie at 15s, where Iowa took six-straight points to lead 21-15 and cause an Iowa State timeout. The Hawkeyes hit at an efficiency of .387 through the set as they pulled ahead 25-17.
SET THREE
ISU won a long rally to put the Cyclones on a run of three to tie the score at 7-7. Iowa State would take the lead at 11-10 as Pam McCune and Schmitt put up the block while Hatch and Hopp teamed up for another to make it 13-11. Iowa State then reached 20 points while the Hawkeyes held 18 on a Schmitt kill. The Cyclones pressed on, capping a rally with a block to pull ahead 23-22. ISU went on to force a fourth, pulling ahead 26-24 after two-straight Hopp kills.
SET FOUR
Iowa State would take the lead of 10-9 after a run including three kills and a block. ISU proceeded to go up 14-11 after Hopp notched her 12th kill, continuing to hit over .300. The Cyclones kept the momentum, pulling ahead 17-12 after three-straight kills by the trio of Hatch, Hopp and Duckworth. Iowa State hit at .394 in the set, never letting up to force a fifth by a set score of 25-18.
SET FIVE
A block by Hopp and Brandt fired up the Cyclones to put the score at 5-3, while three more Cyclone points followed as the Cyclones ran ahead 8-3 as the teams switched sides. Iowa State remained up, sealing the reverse sweep on Schmitt's third kill of the set as the Cyclones dominated, hitting at .429 through the set.
