AMES, Iowa – No. 21 Iowa State (22-6, 12-5 Big 12) faced its first home loss to No. 16 Kansas (21-10, 12-5 Big 12) falling in four sets.
ISU took the third and nearly extended the match to five sets, but fell in extra points in the fourth. Set scores on the night were 23-25, 16-25, 25-15, 24-26.
Rachel Van Gorp was her usual self saving attacks from the floor and had her ninth 20-plus dig performance of the season with 26, totaling over 20 through just three sets. Alea Goolsby joined Van Gorp in double figures with 10 digs.
Tierney Jackson led ISU with 12 kills at .323, while Nayeli Ti'a had her third-straight double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs.
SET ONE
KU took the first three before Jackson laid down a kill, and Kansas would remain up 6-2 while a Ti'a kill and ace capped a 3-0 run to bring it back within one. The Jayhawks stayed ahead at 15-9, while two Ti'a kills came next. The Jayhawks ran ahead 18-11, but ISU kept fighting to make it a one-point set (20-19) after a big Cyclone block. It was tight from there as a Jackson kill once again brought things within one (23-22) but KU reached set point after. Another Ti'a kill extended the set, but Kansas took the next two for the set.
SET TWO
A successful Jayhawk challenge made it 8-3, KU to start and the Jayhawks continued to build on their lead. Jackson delivered her fourth kill without an error to make it 15-8, but Kansas sent over two of their own to cause Iowa State to call its second and final timeout of the set. KU went on to win the second 25-16.
SET THREE
The third opened evenly, while ISU took its first lead at 6-5 on a Lilly Wachholz kill. An Ava Martin ace and another Wachholz kill came next to make it 8-5 capping a 4-0 run. Van Gorp dialed in her 20th dig of the night as Iowa State kept the lead at 10-7, and Kansas took a timeout at 13-8. Goolsby ended a 40-second rally to put the scoreboard at 16-9, and then served to an ace. ISU wasn't done there as Jackson put down a kill after to make it three-straight Cyclone points. Abbi Brenizer brought the Cyclones to 20 (20-11), and Iowa State went on to win the set holding KU to 15 points.
SET FOUR
The fourth opened with four service errors, before Iowa State won another 40-plus second rally. The Cyclones kept the crowd loud going up 8-4 on a Van Gorp ace, but the Jayhawks had a trio of kills to come within one. Brenizer put down her second kill of the set to keep ISU with the advantage at 12-9, and Iowa State reached 15 (15-12) on Jackson's 12th kill. Kansas set out on a scoring run to cut its deficit to one at 19-18, causing an Iowa State timeout. KU took the next point, but Wachholz ended the run as Iowa State won the race to 20. Kansas again matched ISU, and flipped the lead after. Iowa State took it back at 22-21, while another lead change came at 24-23, bringing Kansas to match point.
