Nicholls, Arangio Singles Wins Highlight Day 1 for Cyclones

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Caroline Nicholls and Gala Arangio scored their first collegiate singles as the Cyclones competed against Arkansas in the Duel in the Desert on Thursday,
"I loved the fight we got from the girls today," head coach Jaron Maestas said. "Three of our freshmen just got to campus less than eight days ago and Arkansas is a really experienced team. I think, as a younger team, we really stepped up and showed we wanted to compete."
The first day of spring competition started with doubles action as the Cyclones took on the Razorbacks in a hidden dual format. The Razorbacks fielded a strong team coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2023. Juliette Nask and Ashlee Narker grabbed their first win of the season as a pair, taking down Grace O'Donnell and Lenka Stara 6-2. In other doubles action, Isabella Dunlap and Anna Supapitch Kuearum would fall to Morgan Cross and Indianna Spink, 3-6, while, Gala Arangio and Valeska San Martin Ramirez would lose a heartbreaker to Carolina Gomez and Kelly Keller 6-7(5).
The Cyclones would heat up in singles action as Dunlap, Arangio and Nicholls would all take home singles wins. Dunlap beat Stara, 6-3, 6-2. Nicholls grabbed her first collegiate win against Katie Ferguson, 6-2, 6-2, while Arangio persevered in a three-set win against Grace O'Donnell, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.
In other singles action, Kuearum took the first set against Indianna Spink 6-2, before falling in consecutive sets 1-6, 1-6. Narker fell to Kacie Harvey 4-6, 0-6, while Valeska San Martin Ramirez lost to Anet Koskel, 3-6, 2-6. Juliette Nask would fall to Morgan Cross, 2-6, 2-6.
The Cyclones return to action Friday against Kansas at 2 p.m. CT.
