AZUSA, California – Cam Jones downed the 43-year-old shot put school record with a monster throw over 20 meters at the Jim Duncan Invite while distance runners continued the Bryan Clay Invite.
Jones won the event with 65-9 1/2 (20.05m), the current No. 2 mark in the nation and first mark in program history to break 20 meters. Jones topped his outdoor best on his third attempt, then broke his all-time best on the fifth go. On the sixth and final attempt, Jones had his best throw yet to take hold of the school record. The record of 65-6 1/4 had been held by John Scheetz since 1981, set at the Big 8 Championships.
The thrower now holds the indoor and outdoor shot put in addition to the weight throw school records.
Late into the night at Bryan Clay Maelle Porcher cruised to 15:44.25 in the invite 5,000m, taking down her previous best by 22 seconds. Porcher debuts at No. 4 in Iowa State history putting herself in elite company behind Cyclone legends Lisa Koll, Betsy Saina and Cailie Logue. Porcher took fifth in her section.
The duo of Said Mechaal and Sanele Masondo also raced in invite sections of the 5,000m and put up dominating times. Mechaal ran in the fastest section, putting up 13:34.65 to debut at No. 6 in program history while Masondo ran in the next section, clocking 13:36.13 to now rank at No. 9. It is Masondo's second ranked performance in as many days, coming after racing in the 10,000m last night.
In the hammer throw, Zach Verzani picked up the victory breaking over 200 yards for the first time with 202-1 (61.60m) to move up a spot to fifth in Iowa State history. Garret Wagner notched a season-best 181-0 (55.18m) for fifth.
Brooklyn Sandvig raced in her first collegiate 200m, putting up a wind-legal 24.28 to go down as the ninth-fastest ISU performance. It is the freshman's second race as a Cyclone. In her first race, Sandvig also hit a top-10 ranked performance in the 100m.
Back at Bryan Clay, Riley Beach won the open 800m out of a field of over 200. Beach took three seconds off her previous best set in 2022 with 2:07.75.
Joven Nelson won the 400m hurdles in a PR of 52.35 and freshman Amari Laing won the long jump at the Jim Duncan Invite with a leap of 18-7 3/4 (5.68m), hitting the mark on her fourth jump. Also at Jim Duncan, Jack Latham hit an all-conditions best of 14.15(w) for second in 110m hurdles. The wind reading of 2.1 m/s was just over the legal limit of 2.0 m/s to be counted towards the all-time performance list. Freshman Grayson Hartman also had an all-condition best with 14.53(7.2w) for sixth.
