FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas – Rachel Joseph downed a pair of school records while Gable Sieperda bettered the steeplechase record clocking an automatic Olympic Trials qualifying standard.
Joseph set her first record on the night in the 400-meter while posting a top-15 time in the nation with a blazing 51.63. The time tops Nawal El Moutawakel's 1984 record of 51.84 as Joseph takes hold of both the indoor and outdoor 400m records. El Moutawakel went on to win Olympic gold and the NCAA title in 400-meter hurdles the same year. Joseph entered the meet at No. 2 in outdoor history with 52.21, set earlier this season, and went out to top her all-time best of 51.98. The sophomore's 51.98 won the silver medal at Big 12 Indoor Championships as she set or reset the record for the fifth time.
Within an hour of improving the 40-year-old 400m record, Joseph then topped the 200m record with 23.40. The sprinter bested Oluwaseun Adetiba's 2000 record of 23.49.
At the Virginia Challenge, Sieperda raced in the 3,000m steeplechase for the second week in a row after setting the No. 4-ranking ISU performance of 8:34.24 at Bryan Clay. Sieperda improved on that time by almost eight seconds with the school-record setting time of 8:26.58 while racing among numerous pros. The senior dominantly trimmed five seconds off Wesley Kiptoo's 2021 record of 8:31.82. In addition to securing the Olympic Trials cut of 8:30.00, Sieperda currently ranks at No. 4 in the nation.
Freshman Brooklyn Sandvig put up a pair of top-10 program performances yet again in the 100m and 200m. First, Sandvig stopped the clock in the 100m at 11.74 to improve her time at No. 7 and followed that up with a 23.72 200m to move up from No. 9 to No. 4.
The Cyclones began the day with the discus sweep as Betty Rosvold and Kevin Sakson each sealed a victory. Rosvold improved her mark with each of her legal throws to take the win with 165-0 (50.30m) and Sakson led competitors with 182-1 (55.51m).
Cam Jones, who broke the shot put school record last week, secured his fifth victory of the season with three of them being in the shot put. Jones recorded a strong mark of 64-10 3/4 (19.78m), the second-best of his career through both indoor and outdoor season. Blake Veenstra locked down second with 55-5 (16.89m).
Freshman sprinter Calvin Curcija impressed going sub-47 in the 400m with 46.93, just .03 seconds off the program top 10 list. Gus Langford also set a personal best with 47.74. In the next sprinting event, the 200m, Mikey MClain led the Cyclones to second place with 20.80 at a wind reading of 2.1 m/s, just over the legal limit to improve his standing on the all-time ISU list. Jack Latham and Curcija matched each other down to the thousandth of a second with 21.734.
In hurdles, Latham clocked a wind-legal 14.24 to come .02 seconds off his personal best and finish ninth overall and third in his heat. Freshman Grayson Hartman crossed the finish line at 14.84.
Drake Relays are on deck for the Cyclones, with events beginning Wednesday, April 24 through Saturday, April 27.
