AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State swimming and diving program announced the eighth member of their 2024 signing class on Wednesday, with swimmer Megan Marquardt committing to the Cyclones.Â
Marquardt joins the program from Wilmette, Ill., where she attended and swam at New Trier High School for coach Mac Guy and swam at the club level for coach Alessio De Rossi at NASA Wildcat Aquatics.Â
Marquardt excels in the sprint freestyle with personal bests of 24.02 in the 50 free and 1:55.38 in the 200 free. She also has great experience in the backstroke events, where she has personal bests of 56.52 in the 100 back and 2:03.26 in the 200 back.Â
Marquardt created a high level of success in her youth swimming career, being named to the all-state team in Illinois in 2022 and 2023, while New Trier won the IHSA state championship in 2022 and second place in 2023.Â
At her last IHSA state championship last November, Marquardt claimed first place with three teammates in the 200-yard medley relay at a final time of 1:42.04.Â
"We are excited to have Megan join Cyclone Nation! She has competed at an elite level and will immediately contribute in both the backstroke and freestyle events," assistant head coach Kelly Nordell said. "Megan's energetic personality will fit right in with our entire freshman class."
Outside of the pool, Marquardt enjoyed success in the classroom as a member of the honor roll at New Trier and a member of the National German Honors Society.Â
"I chose ISU for the amazing opportunities that it offers," Marquardt said. "When I started my college search, I wanted to find a school that values academics as well as athletics and ISU offered me that opportunity."
