Former Long Island and Fordham assistant coach Morgan McGhee (formerly Harkness) has been named an assistant coach for the Iowa State swimming program, head coach Matt Leach announced Monday.
McGhee joins the Cyclones after one season at Long Island and two seasons at Fordham, all as an assistant coach. She also spent two seasons as a graduate assistant coach for Notre Dame College.
"We are so excited to welcome Morgan to our Cyclone family," Leach said. "She brings energy, passion and the drive to be here and develop our family the right way through building relationships, communicating expectations, recruiting at a high level and the background to deliver. I can't wait to get to work helping our family develop with Morgan's help and continue to show Cyclone Nation that we develop our student-athletes the right way as people first, students second and athletes third. Morgan will be a tremendous help as we strive to develop greatness in the community, classroom and pool. Go Cyclones!"
At Long Island, McGhee helped co-lead both the men's and women's programs to 13 top-3 finishes at the 2024 Northeast Conference Championships. She also helped the Fordham women's team to back-to-back undefeated dual meet seasons in 2021-22 and 2022-23.
As a graduate assistant, McGhee co-led the Notre Dame College men's team to back-to-back conference titles and the women's team to back-to-back Mountain East Conference runner-up titles, both in 2019-20 and 2020-21.
The Tampa, Florida native competed for Emmanuel University (formerly Emmanuel College) in Franklin Springs, Georgia from 2015-2019. A two-time team captain, she was a top-8 finisher in the 1650 freestyle and a top-3 finisher in the 4x200 freestyle relay during the 2015-16 season at the Appalachian Swimming Conference Championships. She repeated as a top-8 finisher the next season in both the 1650 free and the 1000 free.
Despite a torn shoulder labrum at the beginning of her junior season, McGhee competed at the CSCAA Open Water National Championship while serving in her first season as team captain and a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representative. She followed up as a top-8 finisher at the Conference Carolinas Championships in 2018-19 in the 500 free and was a member of the first-ever Emmanuel women's program to claim a Conference Carolinas team title.
She and her husband, Alasdair, are newlyweds and have a cat, Bronx.
