AMES, Iowa – The Cyclones head to Minneapolis for one final tune up with an exhibition vs. Minnesota, with the Golden Gophers ranked at No. 18 in the preseason AVCA poll. Iowa State received votes in the preseason poll.
The exhibition begins at 3 p.m. inside Maturi Pavilion in Minneapolis. Doors will open at 2 p.m. and it is free admission. The teams will play four sets to 25 points and no live stream or stats will be available. Fans should enter through the main entrance on 19th Ave. SE, and parking is available in the University Ave. ramp. Other lots are expected to fill quickly with the Minnesota State Fair also occurring.
Christy Johnson-Lynch will begin her 20th season leading Iowa State, a program she has transformed. Johnson-Lynch holds 370 career victories (.648 winning percentage), with 203 of those being Big 12 wins to rank fourth in all-time conference history.
Iowa State opens the 2024 season with a squad of 10 returners who produced 72 percent of kills and 58 percent of blocks in 2023. Nayeli Gonzalez readies for her sophomore season following AVCA Honorable Mention All-America, AVCA Midwest Freshman of the Year, AVCA First Team All-Region, Big 12 Rookie of the Year and First Team All-Big 12 honors in her first year out. Two transfers and three freshmen also join the squad. ISU welcomes transfers Tierney Jackson from West Virginia and Amiree Hendricks-Walker from South Florida. Jackson led WVU in blocks both seasons as a Mountaineer while Hendricks-Walker ranked fifth in the AAC in blocks as a sophomore.
The Cyclones and Gophers will meet for the first time since Sept. 18, 2021, where No. 11 Minnesota pulled ahead 3-0. The 2024 Minnesota team is led by Keegan Cook who begins his second year following eight seasons as head coach at Washington. The 2023 squad advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round, winning a tournament match for the ninth straight season. Minnesota returns six starters in addition to three transfers from Oregon and Georgia Tech.
Next up, regular season begins. Iowa State will travel to the Rebel Challenge hosted by UNLV in Las Vegas. The Cyclones will meet Pacific on Friday, Aug. 30 and UNLV on Saturday, Aug. 31.
