Iowa State vs. BYU Primer

Leading Off: The Cyclones return home this week as they welcome the BYU Cougars to Ames. Friday marks the fourth home meet of the season, and the fifth Big 12 conference matchup.

Iowa State had a number of gymnasts standout last weekend against Arizona, with a few earning season high scores. Josie Bergstrom-Te Slaa scored a 9.9 on beam, and Rachel Wilke scored a 9.8. Junior Kaia Bochow earned a 9.825 on bars, marking a career high.

The BYU Cougars are currently ranked 31st on Road to Nationals with a record of 3-10 overall and 1-3 in the Big 12. Iowa State and BYU have met a total of 16 times since 1980. They are led by Head Coach Guard Young who is in his ninth year as head coach.

Storylines:

Freshman Haylee Hardin has won Big 12 Newcomer of the Week three times in a row. She owns four 9.9-plus scores this season and has six event titles.

Hardin is ranked 22nd on floor exercise – the highest individual ranking by any Cyclone.

The Cyclones are ranked 24th on vault, and 36th overall.

Josie Bergstrom-Te Slaa continues to be a leader for the Cyclones. She earned a 9.9 on beam and 9.8 on vault last week.

Bergstrom-Te Slaa also competes All-Around for Iowa State which is a testament to her hard work.

Iowa State returned 10 gymnasts from last year's squad that made the largest improvement in the country.

ISU has added four freshmen and one transfer for a team of 15.

Noelle Adams and Josie Bergstrom-Te Slaa were both named to the Big 12 Preseason Gymnastics team.

Iowa State's 10 victories last season were tied for the most since it won 20 in 2018.

Sophomore Noelle Adams claimed 14 event titles last year in her freshman campaign. Those 14 titles were the third-most in program history by a first-year gymnast.

As a team, ISU claimed 17 event titles last season.

2025 will mark the first year that Iowa State competes in a conference schedule, as the additions of Arizona, Arizona State and Utah put the conference at seven teams.

Switching Sides to BYU:

BYU head coach Guard Young is in his ninth year at BYU.

He was a part of the 1996-2000 BYU men's gymnastics team, winning six All-American awards and two NCAA National Championships on vault.

In pre-season polls the Cougars were picked to finish 26th

Arizona's highest event ranking is on vault, where they sit No. 29. They are also ranked 33rd on floor.

Three gymnasts from BYU were selected for the Big 12 Preseason Gymnastics Team.
