AMES, Iowa – The No. 1 Iowa State men's cross country team made a statement at the Gans Creek Classic on Friday morning. The Cyclones had five scorers finish in the top 20 at the loaded field in Columbia for a team win with 47 points to runner-up Virginia's 107.
"Today was a great day for the whole program," said head coach Jeremy Sudbury. "On the men's side, I thought our guys executed our plan really well. The goal was to get out, be patient early and progress to the field. We kind of expected it to be a hot pace up front and we're trying to have the guys not get involved with that too early."
Sophomore Joash Ruto paced the Cyclones with a runner-up finish in 22:32.0. Sanele Masondo and Robin Kwemoi Bera followed in sixth and seventh, respectively, while Rodgers Kiplimo (13th) and Meshack Kimutai (19th) rounded out ISU's top five. Masondo, Kwemoi Bera and Kiplimo, All-Americans at previous NCAA Championships, also finished the 8K race in under 23 minutes.
Devan Kipyego (52nd), Ryan Watts (70th) and Hanibal Haile (75th), who made his debut on the grass for ISU, also helped Iowa State as the only team to have all runners finish in the top 100.
In the men's Black Championship race, Seth Clevenger and Allen Bonnesen posted top five finishes while Isaac Rivera finished 26th and Emanuel Galdino finished 106th, all running 8K in under 25 minutes. In the men's open race, Quinton Orr posted a top 10 finish in under 25 minutes while Riley Simpson finished 11th in 25:12.0. Nathan Pestka also ran in 27:00.8 for 104th.
"At the end of the day, both programs are in a great spot," said Sudbury. "We've got eight weeks to go until the national meet, and that's still the main focus."
