AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State Cyclones return to action this weekend as they travel to Cedar Falls to face the UNI Panthers in their first dual meet of the new year. The matchup gives Iowa State an opportunity to build momentum and to further test its strength across both swimming and diving events.
THE OPPONENT – UNI
The UNI Panthers enter the weekend with an overall record of 0-1, following a loss to Iowa in October. Earlier this season, UNI placed first at the Coyote Extravaganza and ninth at the Hawkeye Invitational. The Panthers finished fourth at last season's Missouri Valley Conference Championships and return a solid number of experienced swimmers along with a talented group of freshmen.
LAST TIME OUT – Austin & Minneapolis
Iowa State competed at separate competition sites in their last showing, sending three swimmers to the 2025 U.S. Open National Championships in Austin and divers to the Minnesota Invitational in Minneapolis where they had strong performances at both meets.
In Austin, the Cyclone breaststroke group continued to produce, led by Grace Swoboda, who earned finals appearances in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke events. Swoboda advanced to the B-final in both the 100m and 200m distances and placed 13th in the 50m breaststroke. Matilde Geromin gained valuable experience on the national stage, competing in multiple breaststroke events, while Anja Peck advanced to the B-final of the 200m breaststroke after finishing 15th in the prelims.
Meanwhile in Minneapolis, Iowa State's divers delivered consistent results against strong competition. Kate Mitchell led the way with a seventh-place finish on 3-meter boards and a fifth place showing on platform, while multiple Cyclones placed inside the top 10. The strong weekend across both sites provides momentum as Iowa State returns to dual-meet action.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR – Strength Across Events
One of the Cyclone's biggest strengths this season has been its depth. The Cyclones have shown their ability to score points across a wide range of events, especially in breaststroke, backstroke and on the boards, while distance swimmers also continue to contribute valuable points.
ON DECK
Following this weekend's dual, Iowa State will continue its regular-season schedule on the road as the Cyclones head to Houston for the Big 12 Duals on January 16–17.
