COLUMBIA, Mo. – Iowa State (15-10, 0-3 Big 12) was unable to complete a weekend sweep of its bye week tournament, falling to host school Missouri (12-16, 0-3 SEC) on Saturday by a score of 6-4.
The Tigers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, threatening to run away with things from the jump. Four unanswered runs from the Cyclones across the second and third innings would tie things up before Missouri plated a run in both the fourth and fifth to walk away with a win, going 4-0 on the weekend.
The Cyclones were limited to just five hits on the day, with the top four of the order accounting for four of the five knocks. Tatum Johnson was the only ISU player with multiple hits (2), as one was a solo shot, her sixth homer of the season. Reagan Bartholomew had a team-high two RBI, with both coming on a home run.
Designated player/pitcher Abby Carr was the star for the Tigers, as the freshman accounted for four RBI on two hits and struck out five in the circle. Carr allowed just one run on three hits as she picked up her third win of the year.
How it Happened
ISU went three-up, three-down in the top of the first, setting the stage for Missouri's bats in the bottom of the frame. The Tigers would load the bases with just one out, as freshman Abby Carr stepped in and doubled into left to clear the bases and put Mizzou on top 3-0. With Carr on second, the very next batter had a double of their own into right to score Carr and make it 4-0.
In the second, Tatum Johnson led off with a solo shot, towering a ball over the center field fence to cut into the Tiger lead. ISU's next three batters would strike out, though, ending the threat.
The Cyclones used an explosive third frame to tie things up at four. Hayleigh Oliver led the inning off with a full-count walk and would be moved over to second on a perfect sac bunt from McKenna Andrews. With Oliver on second and one out, Jessie Clemons belted her 12th double of the season down the left line to score Oliver and make it 4-2. Clemons' knock forced a Missouri pitching change and brought Bartholomew to the plate. Reagan jumped on a ball and tanked it over the center field fence, scoring both herself and Clemons, to tie things up at four.
A two-out double from the Tigers in the fourth would help them regain the lead, 5-4, as the game turned to the fifth.
Another piece of two-out hitting helped Missouri score a sixth run, as Carr came through with an RBI single to give Mizzou some insurance as it picked up its fourth win of the weekend.
