John Johnson reunites with Iowa State head coach Jimmy Rogers as he joins the Cyclone coaching staff in 2026 as running backs coach.
Johnson did a pair of stints alongside Rogers at South Dakota State, serving as running backs coach in 2017, 2018 and 2020 for the Jackrabbits. The Jackrabbits reached the FCS semifinals all three seasons, including a 2020 championship game appearance.
Johnson, an El Dorado, Arkansas native, spent the 2025 season at New Mexico where he helped the Lobos improve from 5-7 in 2024 to 9-3 the next year. UNM earned a berth to the Rate Bowl, the school’s first bowl appearance since 2016.
Prior to his stop in Albuquerque, Johnson was on staff at Sam Houston for three seasons as it transitioned from Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) to Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). In its first season at the FBS level, Sam Houston went 3-9 before improving to 10-3 in 2024, Johnson’s final year on staff. The 2024 Bearkats won the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl while rushing for 2,337 yards, averaging 179.8 per game and scoring 21 touchdowns on the ground.
At SDSU, Johnson coached Pierre Strong Jr. to back-to-back FCS All-America honors including 2021 when Strong rushed for 1,686 yards and 18 touchdowns. Another of Johnson’s players, Isaiah Davis, also earned All-America honors in 2021.
Johnson’s extensive experience includes a stop in the Alliance of American Football with the Atlanta Legends in 2019, as well as Missouri Southern (2015), Tulsa (2014), Oklahoma Baptist (2013) and Ouachita Baptist (2009-12).
He has been part of the Bill Walsh Coaching Fellowship three times, doing summer internships with the Chicago Bears, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs.
Johnson played fullback for three seasons at Oklahoma State (2005-07) before concluding his career at Ouachita Baptist.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Oklahoma State in 2008 and his master’s degree in sport administration from Henderson State in 2011.
