Angel Escobedo is in his second year working as a volunteer assistant coach for the Cyclones. Escobedo is one of four former world team members on the ISU staff.
During the 2014-15, the Iowa State wrestling team saw a high uptick in production from their 125-141-pound wrestlers. Escobedo coached all four Cyclone starters to 19 wins or more. He also aided in qualifying Earl Hall, Dante Rodriguez and Gabe Moreno for the NCAA Championships. Between Larson, Hall, Rodriguez and Moreno, the group combined for a 92-36 record and 39 bonus-point victories.
As a collegian, Escobedo garnered All-America honors four times, taking the national title in 2008 at 125 pounds. The former Indiana Hoosier was also a three-time Big Ten champion from 2008-10. He ended his collegiate career with 137 victories, ranking No. 2 in Hoosier history.
On the professional circuit, Escobedo picked up a fifth-place finish at the 2013 World Championships as a member of the United State National Team, notching the second-highest finish among the American grapplers. In his three years on the professional tour, the Griffith, Indiana, native has picked up several top-five finishes, including two national team honors.
Escobedo will work primarily with the light weight classes, while continuing his training as a senior-level athlete for the Cyclone Wrestling Club.
