WACO, Texas - Amy Flores scored with under three minutes remaining in the second half to take the Iowa State soccer team into overtime against Baylor. Neither team scored the rest of the way, and the contest ended in a 1-1 tie. Iowa State (5-8-4) collects its fourth tie of the season and earns its eighth point in Big 12 play, moving the Cyclones into sole possession of eighth place in the conference.
Baylor outshot Iowa State 10-4 in a scoreless first half, with ISU goalkeeper Beth Chapman collecting four saves. The Bears struck first early in the second half when Ryan Lee found Kristin Ruef for her second goal of the season. It was the first goal ISU had allowed in the second half in five games and the 11th overall this season.
Down a goal, Iowa State continued to attack, looking for the equalizer. It came in the 88th minute when Kristina Baumann found Flores, who knocked in the shot for her fourth goal of the season. The Cyclones came from behind to force overtime against Baylor for the third straight year.
In the first overtime, Baylor took three shots to Iowa State's two. Chapman came up with two saves for the Cyclones. ISU found several scoring opportunities in the second extra session, attempting three corner kicks and six shots in the ten-minute period. Baylor goalkeeper Monica Housden collected three of her nine saves in the second overtime.
Baylor finished with a 20-16 edge in shots. Kate Kirwan led the Cyclones with four shots, and Deb Benakis and Erin McDowell contributed three shots each. Baumann and Flores each collected four points in the Cyclones' two weekend games.
Iowa State extended its overtime unbeaten streak to eight games, dating back to the beginning of the 2002 season, and ISU has set a school record with four ties this season. Baylor now leads the overall series with Iowa State 6-2-1. Iowa State had lost the previous three meetings at Baylor.
Iowa State returns home to battle Missouri for a spot in the Big 12 Tournament. The Tigers and Cyclones will kick off at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 31.
