LINCOLN, Neb. - Two different Huskers scored two goals each as the Nebraska soccer team topped Iowa State 5-1 Friday in the Big 12 opener for both teams. The Cyclones (3-3-2, 0-1 Big 12) suffer their first road defeat of the season, ending a three-game unbeaten string in road games. Iowa State opened the conference season against the defending Big 12 Tournament champion for the second straight year.
Nebraska got on the board early, with Vern Fitzgerald scoring in the fifth minute. Ashley Carter added a goal at the 26:36 mark, with Kari Hogan collecting her second assist of the evening. The Huskers took a three-goal lead into halftime after Lindsey Ingram scored with under four minutes to play. Nebraska outshot Iowa State 16-4 in the first half.
Iowa State came out on the offensive attack in the second half and converted when Kate Kirwan scored on a free kick just two minutes in. The goal was Kirwan's third this season, all coming in the last three contests. Kirwan has also scored points in four consecutive games and five of ISU's eight games overall. Nebraska put the game out of reach with goals by Fitzgerald and Carter in a five-minute span later in the half. Iowa State had an 8-7 edge in shots in the second half.
Nebraska finished with a 23-12 advantage in shots and a 11-3 edge in corner kicks. Fitzgerald and Carter collected five points apiece for Nebraska. Kirwan took five shots for ISU and Kristina Baumann added three.
Iowa State travels to Colorado to face the Buffaloes on Sunday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m CDT.
