LAWRENCE, Kan. - Iowa State used a decisive rebounding edge and 12 three-pointers to defeat Kansas 73-58, the first victory for ISU over a Big 12 northern division opponent this season. The Cyclones (12-11, 5-7 Big 12) hit double-digit treys for the third consecutive game and finished with a 36-23 advantage in rebounds.
ISU effectively used the inside-out game, getting a combined 27 points from post players Lisa Kriener, Katie Robinette and Brittany Wilkins. The trio also hit a combined 9-of-11 from the free throw line. In addition, teammates Mary Fox, Anne O'Neil and Megan Ronhovde made 11-of-22 from beyond the arc.
Ronhovde's first of four 3-pointers gave ISU a 16-13 lead with less than 13 minutes left in the first half, and Iowa State never trailed the rest of the way. A pair of free throws by Kriener gave the Cyclones a nine-point advantage with four minutes left. Robinette scored Iowa State's final four points of the half, giving ISU a 33-26 lead at the break.
Consecutive baskets by O'Neil gave Iowa State an 11-point edge four minutes into the second half. Over the next two minutes, Kansas forced three Iowa State turnovers and closed to 43-38, but that was as close as the Jayhawks would get.
Iowa State went on a 13-2 run in four minutes, triggered by six points from O'Neil and five from Wilkins, and led 56-40 with 10 minutes left. The Cyclones enjoyed their largest advantage at 68-50 when O'Neil hit her season-high fourth 3-pointer of the game with five minutes left. The shot ended a string of 15 consecutive points scored on treys by Iowa State. ISU shot 53.8 percent from the field in the second half.
O'Neil led all scorers with 18 points and collected seven assists while playing 36 minutes. Other Cyclones scoring in double figures included Ronhovde (14) and Robinette (11). Tamara Ransburg came off the bench to score 15 points on 5-of-5 shooting for Kansas.
Iowa State has won back-to-back Big 12 games for the first time this season and has now won five straight regular-season games against Kansas. The Cyclones have hit 37-of-89 3-pointers in their last three games, good for 41.6 percent.
