CEDAR FALLS, Iowa ? Senior Misty Kimura hit her fifth home run of the season and Julia Lindsey and Ashley Killeen each added a double to help lead the Cyclones to a 9-1 win over Northern Iowa on Wednesday afternoon at UNI's Panther Park. With the win, ISU snaps a five-game losing streak and improves its record to 10-22 overall. Northern Iowa falls to 9-23 on the season. Freshman Katie Reichling picked up her first win of the season on the mound, improving to 1-6.
The Cyclones took the season series from Northern Iowa, defeating the Panthers, 8-0, back on April 1, in Ames.
The Cyclones jumped on the scoreboard right away in the first inning when Kimura hit a home run to left field, sending freshman Jessica Quade and Ashley Killeen home ahead of her for three RBI. The first inning ended with a 3-0 Iowa State lead.
The Cyclones added to their lead in the second inning when Lindsey hit a double to right field scoring freshman Jennifer Bigbee in the process and advancing freshman Fallon Johnson to third. Sophomore Cary Akins then belted a single to center field and Lindsey and Johnson scored, giving Akins two RBI. After a Killeen single that advanced Akins to third, freshman Jessica Quade hit a pop up that allowed Akins to score. Iowa State's lead was 7-0 after two innings.
The Cyclones added two more runs in the fourth inning when Killeen hit her first double of the season and scored Akins and Lindsey in the process. Northern Iowa added its lone run of the game in the fourth inning when Rachel Rogers hit a home run.
Iowa State had 10 hits and only one error, compared to Northern Iowa's four hits and one error. ISU got hits from Lindsey (2), Akins (2), Killeen (2), Kimura (1), Bigbee (1) and Johnson (1).
Iowa State will play host to intrastate rival, Iowa, on Thursday, April 15, starting at 4 p.m. at the Southwest Athletic Complex in Ames. The Cyclones will jump back into league play this weekend when they play host to Texas on April 17-18.
