CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Iowa State (8-4, 0-0 Big 12) bowed out of competition Saturday evening in the UNI-Dome as they suffered back-to-back losses at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals. After downing Northwestern 20-16 in the first round, ISU faced second-seeded and second-ranked Minnesota. The Cyclones suffered their second loss to the Gophers this season, 32-6. The Cyclones then entered the consolation bracket to face ninth-ranked Missouri. The Tigers defeated ISU, 21-18. Double winners for ISU on the afternoon were Nate Gallick and Trent Paulson.
"We ran into Minnesota and were unable to get past them," head coach Bobby Douglas said. "We then ran into Missouri and we were unable to get past them. We didn't wrestle bad, we just lost some close matches."
The Cyclones were only able to muster two wins against the Golden Gophers. The highlight of the match came from Trent Paulson, who returned to action today after missing nearly a month of competition. Paulson avenged a Dec. 9 loss to C.P. Schattler, winning 5-2. The first points were not scored until early in the third period, when Paulson escaped to go up 1-0. A takedown in the final minute moved Paulson's advantage to 3-0, and riding time gave Paulson the 4-0 victory. Paulson (16-1) then registered a 5-2 decision over Missouri's Michael Wagner.
At 141 pounds, Nate Gallick remained undefeated on the season (22-0) by downing Tyler Safratowich of Minnesota. Gallick took down Safratowich four times and used riding time to win, 9-4. In the Missouri dual, Gallick faced Missouri's 19th-ranked Chris McCormick. McCormick took Gallick down early, but Gallick countered with an escape and a takedown of his own to go up 3-2. Another takedown pushed Gallick to a 6-4 lead.
Kurt Backes, ranked ninth at 184 pounds, picked up a 19-2 technical fall in 5:19 over Missouri's Raymond Jordan. Backes wasted no time as he scored a takedown seven seconds into the match. Backes also used four two-point near falls to register the win.
Other Iowa State wrestlers picking up wins in the Missouri dual were Aron Scott, who decisioned Josh Wagner 4-2, and Richard Schopf. Schopf picked up his second dual win of the season, etching an 11-0 major decision over Sean Connole.
ISU will return to Cedar Falls on Jan. 22 to face Northern Iowa at 2 p.m. Iowa State defeated UNI last year, 25-16. The Cyclone grapplers next action in Ames will be Feb. 5, as they play host to the Nittany Lions of Penn State. That dual will take place at 2 p.m. at Ames High School due to a scheduling conflict at Hilton Coliseum.
