CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The first period of the first match was the day's most important. Iowa State's Ben Hanisch, wrestling in front of friends and family from Waterloo, scored five points in the first period and then held on for a 7-5 win over Northern Iowa's Seth Wright to help key the No. 9 Cyclone wrestlers to a 24-15 win over No. 24 Northern Iowa in the West Gym. Hanisch, who prepped at Waterloo Columbus High School, avenged an 8-3 loss to Wright at the Midlands Championships in December. The Cyclones won six matches to lift their record to 9-4. UNI falls to 2-7-1.
"This time I was ready for him," Hanisch said. "Getting out to a good lead in wrestling is very important." Hanisch, a sophomore, improves to 11-14 this season. Wright is 9-12.
Iowa State's 11th-rated 184-pounder Kurt Backes improved to 13-5 by scoring a defensive pin against Northern Iowa's Dan Dunning at the 3:29 mark.
"To be honest, I thought this meet would go down to the last match," Iowa State head coach Bobby Douglas said. "Getting that first one was huge."
The Cyclones got major decision wins from top-ranked and undefeated (23-0) Nate Gallick at 141 pounds, second-rated 157-pounder Trent Paulson (16-1) at 157 pounds and David Bertolino (13-10) at 174 pounds.
Iowa State returns to action Saturday at No. 8 Oklahoma and Sunday at No. 2 Oklahoma State.
