BATON ROUGE, La. - In a meet loaded with national powerhouses, No. 11 Iowa State finished third (194.05) in their season opener at the Super Six, hosted by LSU on Friday. The Cyclones won the floor exercise with a 48.35, just better than 2005 NCAA Championship runner-up Alabama, who posted a 48.30.
"We felt like we fit right in with some of the top teams in the country and really started out well tonight, on the floor," head coach K.J. Kindler said. The floor is tough to start out on, especially in the season opener because you usually don't start with floor during a dual, but overall I was happy with our performance. Our goal was to finish in the top three and that's what we did and we know we can only improve from here on out."
Iowa State led after the fifth rotation, but had completed all four of its events and was forced to wait to see their fate. Both No. 4 Alabama No. 8 Nebraska turned in solid scores in the final rotation to trump the Cyclones by a slim margin. The Huskers defeated ISU by a mere .05 point, giving the Crimson Tide the team victory with a 194.250.
Two-time All-American Janet Anson took fourth in the all-around, collecting a 38.925, while sophomore Jade Kvach and three-time All-American Erin Dethloff tied for sixth, respectively.
ISU began the evening's rotation on the floor exercise, recording a 48.925 behind Janet Anson's 9.8. Anson took runner-up in the event, trailing April Burkholder of LSU, the meet's all-around champion, who put up a 9.825. Senior Laura-Kay Powell turned in a fourth-place 9.75, while junior Ashley Alden and Kvach posted 9.625.
Iowa State then followed that up with a solid performance on the vault. Junior Katie Lasher recorded a career-high 9.875, tying for third in the event with Nebraska's Stephanie Carter. Anson posted a 9.85, Kvach a 9.8 and Powell and Dethloff a 9.7.
"Our vaults were phenomenal," Kindler said. "Katie had the best vault I've ever seen her do since she's been here."
After sitting out a bye in the third rotation, ISU moved to the bars where they put up a 48.95. Lasher led the way once again with a 9.85, a score good for a fifth-place tie in the event. Dethloff collected a 9.8, while freshman Ashley Kent, making her collegiate debut, posted a 9.775 along with Kvach.
The Cyclones finished up on the beam where they garnered a 47.825, behind Dethloff's 9.725. Powell put up a 9.625 while Anson countered with a 9.525.
No. 7 LSU took fourth in the team standings with a 193.90, No. 15 Auburn followed with a 193.675 and No. 16 Missouri recorded a 192.70.
Iowa State will return to Ames and take on Illinois in their home opener on Friday, Jan. 13.
