COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Iowa State tennis team finished up competition at the Missouri Invitational Sunday. Due to the amount of rain that fell in Columbia during the weekend, doubles play was cancelled and the singles play was moved indoors. The Cyclones squared off against the Redbirds of Illinois State in singles action and took three out of six matches.
Jill and Alyssa Palen paced the Cyclones as they both came away with victories in straight sets. Also victorious for the Cyclones was sophomore Kara Hickey, who defeated lllinois State's Julia Zubkova (7-6 (5), 6-3). Hickey had a successful tournament, going undefeated on the weekend in singles in her hometown. She also avenged a loss from last year to Erika Josbena of Missouri, defeating her in straight sets (6-2, 7-5).
Another highlight of the tournament was the play of junior Caitlin Loprinzi. Loprinzi posted a record of 2-1 in singles play this weekend.
"Caitlin continues to be an inspiration", said head coach Michele Conlon. "After battling some surgeries over the past couple of years it was great fun to see her playing so well this weekend. She is definitely getting her game back."
The Cyclones will next travel to Tulsa, Okla., Oct. 18, to compete at the NCAA Regionals.
