TEMPE, Ariz. - No. 4 Iowa State became just the fifth team to score a 197.000 or higher in the country this season, but fell to 14th-ranked Arizona State Friday at Wells Fargo Arena. ASU posted the highest team score yet to date in 2006, scoring a 197.750. The Sun Devils snapped ISU's ten-meet dual winning streak as the Cyclones dropped to 12-3 on the season.
Iowa State began the evening on bars and recorded a 49.150, led by Erin Dethloff's second-place 9.925. Juniors Janet Anson and Katie Lasher each scored a 9.850 to tie for fourth place. Arizona State's Ashley Kelly won her first of three events with a 9.950.
The Cyclones moved to the vault, where the No. 8 ISU vaulters posted a season-high 49.400, tying the fourth-best floor score in school history. Janet Anson nearly missed a perfect 10 for the second time in three meets, scoring a 9.975 to take tie for second with Arizona State's Kelly. Sun Devil April Boone won the event with a perfect 10, her first of the season.
Arizona State led 98.925-98.550 heading into the third rotation where the third-ranked Cyclone floor team looked to make up the difference. ISU recorded its second-best score of the season (49.300) as five gymnasts scored 9.800 or higher. Iowa State was led by Anson's second-place 9.925. The Kansas City, Mo., native entered the event ranked fifth in the country on the floor. Dethloff, a four-time All-American, tied for fourth with a 9.875.
Iowa State finished on beam, an event where the team was ranked third nationally. The Cyclones scored a 49.150 to ASU's 49.400. ISU was led by junior Ashley Alden's third-place 9.900, Anson scored a 9.875 while Dethloff and freshman Ashley Kent each put up a 9.800. Arizona State scored its second perfect 10 of the night as Ashley Kelly recorded the 10 for ASU on beam, winning the event. Kelly's previous high score this season was a 9.925.
Anson, a three-time All-American took second in the all-around with a season-high 39.625. Anson missed a career high by .750 as she scored a 39.700 vs. Nebraska in 2004. Ashley Kelly of Arizona State won the all-around with a 39.875, the highest score in the nation this season. Kelly entered the meet ranked third in the all-around with a 39.430 while Anson was ranked No. 5 (39.390).
The Cyclones came into the meet as the fourth-ranked team in the nation, tying its best ranking in school history. The 2004 squad was also ranked fourth for the week of Jan. 14.
ISU will host intrastate rival Iowa Friday, March 17 at 7 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum, the last home meet for the Cyclones this season. Iowa State defeated Iowa 195.700-193.375 back on Jan. 28.
