AMES, Iowa - The No. 4 Cyclone gymnastics team tied the sixth-best score in school history with a 197.250, sweeping the season series with Iowa in front of 1,210 fans at Hilton Coliseum on Friday.
The 197.250-194.225 win allowed Iowa State University to take a 13-4 advantage in the second-annual Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series. ISU improved to 44-21 all-time vs. Iowa in gymnastics and has defeated the GymHawks in 25-of-the-last 26 meetings.
The Cyclones had their nine-meet dual winning streak snapped at Arizona State last weekend, but garnered their 10th dual victory of the season in impressive fashion, setting or tying season highs on three events.
Iowa State began the evening on vault where it recorded a 49.350, just short of the season-high 49.400 scored last weekend at Arizona State. Senior Jessica Oney led off with a 9.775, tying a season high to tie for seventh place. Junior Katie Lasher posted a career-high 9.900 to take second. Janet Anson anchored the eighth-ranked vault squad with a first-place 9.950. Anson entered the event as the No. 2 ranked vaulter in the nation, averaging a 9.900.
"Top to bottom vault was by far our strongest event tonight," head coach K.J. Kindler said. "Jess (Oney) did a great job of starting us off and Katie Lasher performed her best vault of the season."
The No. 9 ISU bars squad then took the floor where it tied a season-high with a 49.225, sweeping the top three places. Four-time All-American Erin Dethloff led the way for Iowa State, taking first with a 9.900. Redshirt Sophomore Jade Kvach (9.875) and senior Laura-Kay Powell (9.850) notched season highs to take second and third, respectively. Powell competed on bars for just the fourth time this season.
"We struggled early on bars, but we really stepped it up after that," Kindler said. "I was really proud of the way we competed after we had a fall."
Iowa State took a 98.575-96.375 lead into the third rotation where the second-ranked Cyclone beam squad showed why it is one of the best beam team's in the country. ISU hit all six routines, putting together a season-high 49.300. Dethloff posted a season-high 9.925 to tie for the win with the GymHawks' Danielle Legeai. Freshman Ashley Kent posted a season-high 9.900 to tie for third with Powell.
The Cyclones dominated on floor, where the third-ranked floor squad set a season high with a 49.400. Anson led the way for ISU, posting a season high 9.950 to take first. The Kansas City, Mo., native entered the event ranked second in the nation with a 9.910 average. Dethloff tied for second with Iowa's Liz Grajewski at 9.900.
ISU swept the top three places in the all-around as Dethloff took top honors with a season-high 39.575. Anson took second with a 39.450 while Powell took third with a season-high 39.400.
"Next time we compete here will be at Regionals," Kindler said. "I hope we use the experience here tonight to build on our performance the next time we compete here."
The Cyclones will host the North Central Regional for the first time in school history on April 8 in Hilton Coliseum.
Iowa State clinched the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series with a win over Iowa in gymnastics on Jan. 28 and improved to 13-3 overall (4-0 Big 12 duals) on the season.
Softball is the only remaining event between the two schools in the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series. That event will take place April 4 in Ames.
Iowa State will travel to Lincoln, Neb., for the second time this season to compete in the Big 12 Championships on March 25 at 7 p.m. ISU is a perfect 4-0 against conference opponents in dual action this season for the first time in Cyclone history.
