LINCOLN, Neb. - The No. 4 Iowa State gymnastics squad trailed by .275 heading into the final rotation but turned in a season-high on floor, winning ISU's second-ever Big 12 Gymnastics Championship Saturday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. ISU won with a 196.425, 11th-ranked Nebraska took second (196.275), No. 6 Oklahoma finished third (195.350), while Missouri rounded out the event with a fourth-place 194.850.
"Every time we come in here, we feel like any team can come out winners," head coach K.J. Kindler said. "We are really proud we were able to do that tonight and were so steady all night. We were kind of hitting our events but not doing anything super special until we got to floor. Before we went to floor I told them `You are going to have to have the most amazing floor of your careers' and they said `We will.' They didn't even hesitate and that's the way this team has been."
The Cyclones showed once again why they have one of the elite floor team's in the nation as they made up the difference, scoring a season-high 49.450. Junior Ashley Alden and redshirt sophomore Jade Kvach led off with 9.850s before senior Kacey Oiness peformed the best floor routine of her career when the team needed it, starting the momentum. Oiness came through with a career-high 9.950, bettering her previous season best by .750 to win the event.
"Coming in I knew we were behind and I needed to do my best routine," Oiness said. "I wanted it for the team. To be a Big 12 Champion is amazing and I'm proud to help our team to victory."
The Cyclones then finished off the meet with its trio of All-Americans in Erin Dethloff, Laura-Kay Powell and Janet Anson. Dethloff went 9.850, while Powell and Anson tied for second with a 9.900 each.
Iowa State (16-3 overall, 4-0 in conference duals), began the evening on vault, where the sixth-ranked Cyclone vault squad put together a second-place 49.025. Anson scored ISU's top routine with a Yurchenko one-and-a half, good for a 9.900, sharing the vault championship with Nebraska's Emily Parsons. Anson, a Kansas City, Mo., native, tied for second on the event at last year's Championships, entered the event as the second-ranked vaulter in the country with a 9.935 RQS.
"We were very upbeat tonight and pumped early," Anson said. "We had tons of confidence and this proves we are one of the best teams in the country by stepping up to the pressure."
In the second rotation, the No. 8 uneven bars team took second to the Huskers with a 48.900. Oiness led off for Iowa State, scoring a 9.700. Kvach and Anson then countered with a 9.800, tying for sixth. Dethloff finished in a four-way tie for first at 9.850 with Nebraska's Vanessa Meloche and Desire' Sniatynski, in addition to Oklahoma's Stephanie LoPiccolo. Dethloff collected her second-ever bars title as she was Big 12 co-champion in 2004.
ISU trailed 11th-ranked Nebraska 98.250-97.925 entering the third rotation, where the eighth-ranked beam squad looked to make up the difference. After Kvach and Anson posted a 9.750, freshman Ashley Kent (9.800) and junior Ashley Alden (9.850) stepped up. However, Iowa State was not yet finished as two-time All-American Laura-Kay Powell anchored with her usual consistency, taking second with a 9.875. Powell defeated the No. 1-ranked Lauren Schwartzman of Missouri, who tied for second with a 9.85. Nebraska's Parsons won the event with a 9.900.
Oklahoma's Brittney Koncak-Schumann won the all-around with a 39.425. Anson and Parsons tied for second with a 39.375, while Dethloff took fifth with a 39.225.
At the completion of the event, Anson and Kindler were named Big 12 Gymnast of the Year and Big 12 Coach of the Year, respectively. Anson became the first Cyclone to win the award in school history. Kindler won the top coaching honor for the third-consecutive year and is currently the reigning National Coach of the Year.
Iowa State won in Lincoln for the second time this season. In their March 5 meeting, ISU became the first team to win in the Bob Devaney Sports Center since 1993.
