WACO, Texas - After one day of competition at the 2006 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Iowa State's Erica Lynn is in second place in the heptathlon competition, only 41 points off of first place.
Senior Lynn finished first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.12, putting her in the lead from the start of competition. With nine competitors in the heptathlon field, Lynn continued to lead with two events finished after jumping 5-6 ½ in the high jump.
After the shot put, Lynn fell into third place overall, but bounced back into second after running a career best in the 200-meter dash. Lynn crossed the line with a time of 25.64, the fastest of the day. Her total first-day score was 3,230 points while Julianne Kennedy of Texas Tech led the day in first with a score of 3,271.
"She had a good first day and made a real solid start," women's head coach Dick Lee said. "High jump and shot put were solid for her and then she ran a personal best in the 200 meters. She got third in indoors at Big 12 and we're hoping for another good finish."
Iowa State Neil Hines made a strong move up in the decathlon during the high jump, his fourth event of the day. Hines finished third in the event with a jump of 6-7 bringing him to sixth place overall. Hines closed the day in seventh overall after running 52.47 in the 400-meter dash.
"Neil high jumped really well and performed decent in everything else," said men's head coach Steve Lynn. ". His hip injury flared up in the 400 meters and almost had to pull out, but I know he's going to battle hard when he gets out here tomorrow." The decathlon and heptathlon events conclude tomorrow with the action beginning at 3 p.m. Results from today's competition can be found at www.baylorbears.com.
