SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sophomore Chase Madison finished up his 2006 season with an 11th-place finish in the discus throw at the NCAA outdoor track and field championships in Sacramento, Calif. Madison (Newton) finished the competition with a best throw of 180-10, just a two feet shy of being a top eight finisher.
"At this level everyone is really good and he beat a bunch of these guys at Drake and other competitions, but conditions change and competitors' strengths change," said men's head coach Steve Lynn. "I'm really proud of him overcoming his wrist and back injuries. He's one of the youngest in the field and he has a great future ahead of him and I'm looking forward to that future."
This was Madison's first NCAA championships competition and he will return for two more years at Iowa State. He was the only true freshman in the field at the championships.
Senior Erica Lynn made her debut at the NCAA Championships on Friday. She competed in the heptathlon and finished day one in 23rd place after four events with 3030 points. The Ames, Iowa native competed today in the 100-meter hurdles (14.59), high jump (5-4 1/4), shot put (34-7 3/4), and 200-meter dash (26.01).
Lynn will be back in action Saturday at 12:30 p.m. CDT to close out her career at Iowa State. Also competing for the Cyclones on Saturday will be all-American David Rotich in the 1,500 meters finals set to run at 4:04 p.m. CDT. Results and a recap of Saturday's events can be found at www.cyclones.com.
