Soccer Storm Hits Creighton for the 2-1 Win

OMAHA, Neb. ? Iowa State used a quick comeback in the second half to claim a 2-1 victory over Creighton Friday night at the Diadora Classic.

Iowa State opened the scoring in the first half with a goal by junior forward Erin Witte, her first of the season.

Creighton started off the second half scoring in the 54th-minute on a goal by Shawn Magrum, tying the game at one apiece. Iowa State didn't take long to storm back on top, however, as the Cyclones scored with in a minute. Brittanie Waddell used the throw in by Witte and took an 18-yard blast from the right side of the goal for the score. Waddell had an impressive night with a goal, an assist and three shots against Creighton.

The Bluejays kept firing late in the game, but Cyclone goalkeeper Ann Gleason earned four saves to record her second win of the season. Iowa State improves to 2-3-0 on the season while Creighton drops to 2-3-1.

"It was an outstanding team effort," said Iowa State head coach Rebecca Hornbacher. "Erin Witte played one of her best games of the season. She really came out working hard and created a great opportunity and got us a score.”

Sophomore Leslie Hill led the Cyclones with five shots, more than doubling her total for the season. Junior Stephanie Kaphingst added four shots in the team's effort to outshoot Creighton, 21-13. Hornbacher said, "One of our goals tonight was to take chances and to not be afraid to take risks with putting shots on goal. I told the women before the game that ?we are not going to score until we take shots and continue to test the goalkeeper.'" The Cyclones did just that. Four Cyclones took three shots or more in the contest, a team season high.

The Cyclones return to action on Sunday in their second game of the tournament against Northern Iowa (0-4-0). Game time is set for 11 a.m. and can be followed via live stats at www.cyclones.com.
