Boeve's Blog: Week 11

Iowa State senior volleyball player Erin Boeve will be writing a weekly blog this season to give Cyclone fans an insiders look at the happenings of the program, which last year advanced to the NCAA Tournament for just the second time in school history. Boeve, a middle blocker from Steen, Minn., became the first Cyclone to earn AVCA All-American Honorable Mention honors a year ago. She also was the first ISU volleyballer to be named first-team All-Big 12 and the league's Co-Defensive Player of the Year. A preseason All-Big 12 selection this year, Boeve is the school's record holder for career block assists and owns the top-two single seasons in school history as well.

Hello! The Cyclone volleyball team is back on the winning side after the completion of this week. Even though we only had one match against Colorado, it was a great win for us to get back on track after three tough losses.

We started the week off with practice and lifting on Monday. Then instead of practicing before we left on Tuesday, we practiced once we got into Boulder, Colo. We flew out of Ames at about 4 p.m. The flight was about an hour and a half long, but it was still only 5 p.m., when we got there because of the time change. I usually dread the flight to Colorado because it can get a little rough and bumpy flying over those mountains, but this flight wasn't too bad. On Tuesday night, we practiced and got a bite to eat at Noodle's before we checked into the hotel.

On Wednesday, we started off the day with team breakfast, film and then we were off to practice! Once practice was complete we ate at the Olive Garden. Since we pre-ordered our food, it was pretty much ready when we got there! That makes it really convenient for us, so then we don't have to sit in a restaurant all afternoon waiting for our food. Since we were in and out of the restaurant so quickly we had time to relax before the big match.

We came out of the night with a win, but we started out a little slow. I don't know if it was the change in altitude or the time change, but we just couldn't get things going the first game. We lost the first game (24-30), but came back winning the second game (30-24). After the break was complete, we lost the third game (25-30), but with some momentum in the next game we came back wining 30-19. Now it was time for the deciding fifth game, we cut it a little close but ended up winning 15-13. I guess we just thought we had to make it a little interesting. I don't think our fan club we had there was in favor of that!

This was a great win for us, especially since Colorado has not yet won a Big 12 match this season. We did not want to be the ones to give that first win to them. This was also a great way to finish off the first half of Big 12 play. We ended up 6-4 in the conference, which we were happy with but now we are going to try to improve on that during the second half of the Big 12!

This past weekend was our bye weekend. It is a great time for us to rest and refocus for the rest of the season. The coaches gave us Friday, Saturday and Sunday off. This was especially nice since we didn't get home from Colorado until about 2 a.m., on Thursday morning. We were originally supposed to get home sooner but we had to fly into Des Moines instead of Ames because of some storm systems that were going through. This meant we had to bus back to Ames once we finally got to Iowa. We will be back in the gym on Monday to start preparing for Texas Tech, as we play them on Wednesday night in Hilton at 6:30 p.m. Come and cheer us on!
