AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State wrestling head coach Cael Sanderson has announced that two grapplers with ISU ties will wrestle for the Cyclones, starting next season. Nate Carr, Jr. (Grey, Ga.) and Andrew Long (Creston, Iowa) have both signed national letters of intent to attend Iowa State.
Nate Carr Jr. will transfer to Iowa State from Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge. The 2007 National Junior College 157-pound champion will redshirt this season for the Titans and will have three years of eligibility remaining when he goes to ISU. Wrestling unattached, Carr Jr., competed in the Harold Nichols/Cyclone Open Nov. 10.
During his prep career, Nate Carr Jr. held a 210-2 record at Jones County High School and was a three-time Georgia state champion. He posted a spotless 63-0 mark and was selected to the Georgia Wrestling Coaches Association Dream Team at 152 pounds during the 2004-05 season. Carr was the 2005 Georgia recipient of the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award. He placed fifth at the National High School Coaches Association Junior National Championship to earn All-American honors. He was also named Wrestling USA Magazine Georgia All-American.
Carr Jr. is the son of former Cyclone wrestling great, Nate Carr Sr. During the early-1980s, Nate Sr. won three NCAA titles and two Big Eight crowns at 150 pounds. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, Carr wrestled his way to a bronze medal. His accomplishments where acknowledged when he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Long will join ISU's wrestling program in which older brother Dylan Long is currently a volunteer wrestling coach. Days away from embarking upon his senior season at Creston High School, Long has a 129-13 prep record through three seasons and is listed nationally among the top-10 preps at 119 pounds by Amateur Wrestling News. He is a two-time Iowa high school champ, winning titles at 103 pounds in 2006 and at 112 pounds in 2007.
Facing national competition, Long finished as the 112-pound Greco-Roman champion at this summer's Junior National Championships in Fargo, N.D. In 2006, he registered a third-place Greco-Roman finish at 105 pounds. At the Northern Plains Regional Championships, Long finished as the 2007 125-pound freestyle runner-up and took top-Greco-Roman honors at 112 pounds in 2006. He was a freestyle and Greco-Roman cadet national champion in 2005.
