AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State true freshmen Dalton Jensen (141) and Andrew Sorenson (165) took runner-up honors wrestling unattached at the Kaye Young Open hosted by North Iowa Area Community College Saturday in Mason City, Iowa. Brad Kruse (157) and Kyle Simonson (HWT) each placed third in their first action of the season.
Seeded sixth at 141 pounds, Jensen tallied back-to-back falls and two upsets, including a 4:48 stick of second-seeded T.J. Moen of NIACC. Jensen suffered a 5-1 decision by Lyubo Kumbarov of Colby Community College in the championship match. He finished the tournament with four victories, three of which were by fall.
Sorenson advanced to the 165-pound title bout with an opening win by fall and a 2-0 shutout over second-seeded Lamar Reed of Northwestern College. Sorenson was pinned in 3:45 by Dana's top-seeded Bulla Tuzon in the championship match.
Kruse, a redshirt freshman, beat third-seeded Kendall Burke of Dana twice en route a third-place finish at 157 pounds. Kruse first handed Burke a 7-2 decision and then registered a 1:29 pin of Willie Slayden (Una.). Kruse again collided with Burke in the consolation bracket and recorded a 14-7 decision. In the consolation finals, Kruse scored a 13-3 major decision over fourth-seeded Cole Garcia of Colby Community College.
Seeded-third at heavyweight, Simonson tallied decisions over Colby Community College's Gabe Waiz (9-2) and a 7-0 blanking of NIACC's Beau Tudor before falling to second-seeded Tucker Lane of Nebraska, 3-1 in overtime. Simonson rebounded with a 2:16 stick of Nic Hagan (UD) and a 10-4 decision over Derrick Kaul of Ellsworth Community College for third place.
Jerome Whitter also wrestled unattached and at 149 pounds. He pinned fifth-seeded Andrew Weins (HC) in 5:08.
