AMES, Iowa- The 11th-ranked Iowa State gymnastics team put together a season-high on bars (49.050) to knock off No. 20 Missouri, 195.725-195.025 in Hilton Coliseum Friday. The Cyclones beat the Tigers for the second time this season. ISU entered the final rotation with a slim lead, but three Iowa State gymnasts recorded season-highs on floor to clinch the ISU victory.
"We kept on doing our job, said Cyclones head coach Jay Ronayne. "With the injuries, everyone knew they had to step up and they did a great job. I knew they were a bars team and that they could hit bars, we just had to go do it. We're getting close to where we want to be. All we need to do is fix the little things. We are on our way."
In the first rotation, ISU's Megan Barnes took top honors on vault (9.850), while Jasmine Thompson shared second-place honors (9.825) with MU's Adrianne Perry and senior Janet Anson finished fifth (9.750). Missouri scored a season-high on bars (48.950) and had a solid vault rotation to take a slight early lead after the first two rotations 97.725-97.675.
Iowa State swept a three-way tie for first-place on bars, en route to a season-high team score of 49.050. Katie Lasher, Nikki Dilbert and Ceilia Maccani led the way with scores of 9.850. Lasher recorded a season-high and Dilbert and Maccani set new career-highs. Rounding out the top five for ISU was Anson (9.800).
ISU competed without the services of Ashley Kent and Ashley Alden who have been sidelined by injuries. However, freshman Katie Sweetin was impressive on beam to help the team to a 49.125 team score. She earned a career-high 9.875 with her routine, and Melanie Tham made her career debut on beam, turning in a solid 9.700 to help carry the Cyclones. Jade Kvach and Anson, the two seniors in the line-up, anchored the beam rotation with solid scores of 9.825 and 9.875, respectively.
Iowa State took advantage of a strong beam score to take the lead after the third rotation by a score of 146.800-146.675.
With the crowd behind them, Iowa State turned in an impressive performance on floor to finish the night strong. Iowa State expanded its lead by recording four of the top six floor scores, topped by Anson's first-place (9.90) routine, which tied her season high. Freshman Melanie Tham (9.80) and Barnes (9.775) also put together season highs. Tham and Thompson tied for second place.
ISU's Thompson had a great night in her all-around debut. She started her night with an impressive 9.825 vault, notching a career high and a second-place finish. She also scored a career-high on beam (9.850).
The all-around champion was Anson with a 39.325, followed by teammates Thompson in third (38.800) and Barnes in fourth (38.325). Second place went to Missouri's Perry (39.300). Sweetin was honored with the Mari-Rae Sopper Award for outstanding performance.
