SAN JUAN, P.R. ? The Iowa State women's golf team ended the first round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic Monday. The Cyclones stand in 11th place in a 16-team field after shooting a team total of 307. Freshman Pennapa Pulsawath led the way for ISU with a 75 and is tied with six others for 26th place. Texas Christian is leading the field on the strength of three individuals in the top-10. TCU's Valentine Derrey shot a blistering 5-under 67 to take the early lead in the medalist race.
Pulsawath, just a freshman, opened up her Iowa State career with a top-10 finish at the Lady Badger Invitational. After four events, she led the team during the fall in scoring average with a 77.33 mark. She remains eight shots out of the lead.
Karly Pinder had two top-10 finishes during a breakthrough fall season and is in the middle of the pack after carding a 77.
Senior Christi Athas completed her 100th career round, passing Cathy Ennis to move up to ninth place in most rounds played. Athas scored a 79 in her first round of action, positioning herself at 57th.
Kendra Hanson started off her spring season in positive form, scoring a 4-over 76 to sit at 33rd. Jessica Shin had her best performance in the fall finale, tying for 16th at the Aloha Purdue Invite. Shin shot a first-round total of 80 to sit at 63rd.
The second round begins tomorrow at 7 a.m.
