AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State men's golf team heads to sunny Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., for the Mission Inn Collegiate Invitational hosted by Xavier March 10-11. The Cyclones will be facing 14 of the 16 teams scheduled to compete for first time this season. Players will tee-off both days with a 7 a.m. shotgun start at the par-72, 6,923 yard El Campeon Course. ISU finished seventh at both its previous spring tournaments, the GADO North Texas Classic and the All-American Intercollegiate Invitational.
“We're anxious to get to some good weather,” head coach Jay Horton said. “By the time we get back to Iowa we're hoping the weather will be a little bit better so we can start hitting our stride. It's important this weekend that we step up against the teams in our district and keep improving on our own.”
Rodney Hamblin and Cameron White have registered ISU's best finishes of the spring, placing 13th and fifth, respectively. Hamblin ended with a three-round total of 220 in Houston to give him his fourth top-20 finish this season and eighth of his career. White was unfazed by adverse weather in Guadalajara as the freshman garnered his second top-five finish. Junior Chris Baker returned after missing the spring opener to finish 21st in Houston last week, one stroke from earning his 14th career top-20 finish. Cedric Bertin was solid in his first two tournaments, placing 23rd and 28th, and improved his spring debut score by six strokes last week in Houston.
Iowa State faced Xavier in the fall season-opener at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational where the Musketeers went out and broke the team tournament record. The Cyclones have defeated in-state rival Iowa two times, at the Big Four Championship and the GADO North Texas Classic.
Last year's Xavier Invitational was held at the Orange Country National in Winter Garden, Fla., where Iowa State charged to fourth place behind Joe Cermak. Cermak enjoyed a sixth-place finish, posting two rounds of 70.
The Cyclones will have a week off before taking part at the Ron Moore Invitational March 19-20 in Phoenix, Ariz.
