AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State head wrestling coach Cael Sanderson will welcome a pair of 2007 215-pound state champions from high schools with strong wrestling tradition to the Cyclone wrestling room this fall. Iowa 215-pound champion Kyle Simonson of Algona and Wisconsin 215-pound champion Dallas O'Malley of Stoughton will attend Iowa State and compete on the Cyclones' defending Big 12 champion wrestling team. Simonson was a three-time placewinner. O'Malley won his state crown for Stoughton High School after not placing his first three years of prep competition.
Simonson finished his senior season with a 33-1 record, including a 6-5 win over John Helgerson of North Fayette-West Union in the Class 2-A 215-pound title match. He was the 39th state champion from Algona High School. Simonson placed eighth as a sophomore and third as a junior at 189 pounds. He finished his high school career boasting an 82-22 career record with 54 pins.
O'Malley was the 41st state champion out of Stoughton's wrestling program. He was 46-1 at 215 pounds his senior season with 21 pins. O'Malley beat Trevor Cordes of Marshfield, 7-5, for the 2007 Division I title. O'Malley finished his career with a 113-21 record and 57 pins.
