AMES, Iowa ?
Affirming its committment to the future of the Iowa State women's golf and softball programs the ISU athletics department announced Friday that softball coach Stacy Gemeinhardt-Cesler and golf coach Christie Martens have received three-year contract extensions that will keep them at ISU through the 2009-10 season.
"We are fortunate to have coaches on our staff like Stacy and Christie who bring such passion and enthusiasm to their jobs, student-athletes and to our entire department," said Iowa State Senior Associate Director of Athletics Calli Sanders. "They have both made a substantial difference in their programs during their first contract term, and we look forward to enjoying continued improvement, stability and success in our softball and women's golf programs."
Gemeinhardt-Cesler, who enters her third season as the Cyclones' head coach, led the Cyclones to 24 wins in 2007, the most by an Iowa State team since the 1989 season. A trio of freshmen were among the top-four Cyclone hitters last season, including Alex Johnson, who broke an ISU rookie record with 62 hits. Johnson, who led the Cyclones with six homers and 28 runs batted in and was an all-Big 12 selection, was just the second player in school history to record more than 60 hits in a season. Freshmen Courtney Wray and Amanda Bradberry finished third and fourth on the team in batting average, respectively.
The Cyclones have improved offensively as a team since Gemeinhardt-Cesler arrived. ISU had 369 hits, the highest since 1999. Iowa State stole 63 bases last season, the most thefts since 2000.
Under the direction of Martens, the women's golf program has experienced a steady rise over the last three seasons, improving in the national rankings from 112th to 83rd last season. Martens inked one of the top recruiting classes in the country this year, bringing in a pair of international players in addition to Katelynn Hogenson from Muscatine. Martens has expanded her recruiting base over the past two seasons, adding Laurence Herman of Belgium and Victoria Stefansen of Denmark to go with Pennapa Pulsawath of Thailand, who led ISU in stroke average as a freshman. Seniors Karly Pinder and Kendra Hanson have had impressive summers. Hanson won the Iowa Women's State Amateur golf championship and Pinder qualified for the U.S. Women's Amateur.
Marten's 2005-06 squad recorded its second-highest finish in Big 12 Championship history behind Jessica Shin's eighth-place finish, the highest placing for a Cyclone individual in the 11-year history of the Big 12 Championship.
