AMES, Iowa- Iowa State sophomore Lashawn Wright was ISU's frontrunner in the opening day at the 2008 ISU Track & Field Open. Inside the Lied Recreational Center, Wright blew past the competition in the 200-meter dash, crossing the line in 24.49 seconds, seven-one hundredths of a second ahead of the runner-up. ISU's short sprinter continues to improve with each meet, once again setting a personal-best time.
“I thought Lashawn did a great job today and she executed better that she has all season,” said sprints and hurdles coach Ronnie Williams. “I am very happy for her and it is good to see that she is taking steps in the right direction.”
Junior Amy Waggoner earned a second-place finish in the women's weight throw. Waggoner had three straight fouls before launching a 51-6 ? toss.
The women's distance medley relay team put up a strong fight in a tight race. Cross country all-American Grace Kemmey led off the race for the Cyclones, and Big 12 10,000-meter champion Lisa Koll anchored the squad to a second-place finish with a time of 12:10.80.
On the men's side, Zac Brouillette continued his excellent indoor season, earning second in the weight throw with a toss of 57-2. Brouillette will compete for his third straight victory in the shot put tomorrow.
Stefan Tauber was another top-finisher on the men's side. The senior finished runner-up in the long jump with a career-best leap of 23-1 ?.
The Cyclones will be back in action tomorrow at 10:25 a.m., beginning with the 3,000-meter run. The Open is scheduled to conclude at 6 p.m. Complete results will be posted on Cyclones.com.
