Wischer Has Solid Day for ISU Tennis

AMES, Iowa ? Erin Karonis wrapped up singles action at the Intercollegiate Tennis Regional in Salt Lake City, Utah, Friday, while the remainder of the Iowa State tennis team played doubles and singles matches in the New Mexico Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.

Karonis fell to Nebraska's Wiveca Swarting, 6-3, 6-3, in the round of 32, to eliminate her from the regional tournament. Karonis won her opening match of the event on Thursday, knocking off a competitor from Wichita State.

“I was pleased with how Erin played today,” ISU head coach Armando Espinosa said. “However, I think we need to learn to start better rather than playing catch up.”

Sophomore Liza Wischer won both of her singles matches in the New Mexico Invitational. The Grand Forks, N.D., native collected wins over Western New Mexico's Izelle Oliver (6-0, 6-1) and New Mexico's Manumea Durie (7-6, 6-3).

Tessa Lang and Bolan Tarkoe each split singles matches Friday. Lang earned a win over Western New Mexico's Emily Lampman (6-0- 6-3) before falling to Missouri's Jamie Mera (6-3, 6-1). Tarkoe dropped her first match to Kansas State's Natasha Vieira (6-0, 6-2) before taking down Western New Mexico's Stephanie Shelton (6-1, 6-1).

Lang has teamed with Chelsea Loprinzi in doubles for the last two days, winning both matches. On Thursday, the team defeated a pair from Western New Mexico (8-5) and on Friday the Cyclones beat a team from Missouri (Ayala/Modesto) 8-5. Tarkoe and Marie-Christine Chartier also picked up a doubles win for the Cyclones over a team from Western New Mexico (8-3) on Friday.

Play at the New Mexico Invitational will continue Saturday and Sunday.
