AMES, Iowa ? In many ways, Iowa State track and field distance runner Brandon Rooney has set his sights high. The junior was named first-team academic all-Big 12 honoree in cross country and earned a fourth-place finish in the mile run at the 2007 Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Hailing from the mountains of Tehachapi, Calif., Rooney is majoring in kinesiology and aspires to become a student in medical school, but is also considering studying for his commercial airline pilot license.
At Tehachapi High School, Rooney earned 2005 all-area athlete-of-the-year honors in both cross country and track. He captured fourth in the state meet in the 1,600 meter run.
“We feel like he has a lot of potential and really had a big breakthrough last indoor season, running the mile in 4:04 flat," Iowa State head coach Corey Ihmels said. "It's logical for him this indoor season to make that next big jump to 4:01, 4:02 maybe even four minutes flat and that's what we're working toward this indoor season."
Rooney has many goals set for himself on the track this season.
“I want to win a conference championship, either team or individual, and I want to participate at the national meet,” Rooney said.
Whether it be running the mile in four minutes or piloting a jet airliner, Rooney has what it takes to accomplish many of his goals.
Iowa State is getting set for the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championship, Feb. 29-March 1 in Lincoln, Neb.
