AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State tennis signee Maria Fernanda Macedo was crowned singles champion at the 2008 National Intercollegiate Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Macedo, a native of Mexico City, attends high school at ITESM. She defeated Ana Lucia Migliarini from Anahuac South Campus, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. Migliarini, a native of Monteviedo, Uruguay, is a former top 25 junior tennis player according to the International Tennis Federation.
Macedo has been ranked as high as No. 1 nationally in Mexico. She currently plays No. 1 doubles and singles for ITESM. Macedo was the singles and doubles champion at the hard court nationals in 2007. She has also competed internationally at the 2007 Coffee Bowl in Costa Rica.
The tournament consisted mostly of collegiate tennis players, but high school tennis players, like Macedo also competed.
The schools that competed were ITESM Mexico City, Tecnologico de Monterrey campus La Laguna, Mexico City, Estado de Mexico, Santa Fe, Puebla, Guadalajara, Anahuac North Campus and Anahuac South Campus, Iberoamericana and Las Americas University.
