COLUMBIA, Mo.? ? Iowa State thrower Luke Pinkelman, the much hyped freshman, proved that he is one of the best on Saturday, as he took first in the shot put at the Missouri Relays in Columbia, Mo.? In his first meet as a Cyclone, he threw a distance of 57-03/4, which broke the NCAA Regional Qualifying mark by over three-quarters of a foot.
“We're very excited about Luke's performance,” assistant coach Blake Boldon said.? “The weather has made it tough to practice outdoors and the conditions were not great today, so for Luke to throw so well is a real testament to both his hard work, and that of throws coach John Dagata.”
On the women's side, dual soccer-track athlete Molly Lohry came out of nowhere to take second place in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:27.14; her career best.?
Lohry also competed on the Iowa State Women's 4x800 relay team.? With the help Erin Penticoff, Kaylee Small, and Kelli Oettle the Cyclones squad was able to take first place, with a time of 9:38.52.
“I'm excited to get the outdoor season started, and hopefully to get to compete in some better conditions as the season progresses,”?head coach Corey Ihmels said.? “Next week we'll be getting our distance runners to a top notch meet at Stanford, and getting our sprinters and throwers into some big meets in the next few weeks.”
Next up for the Cyclones, the distance runners will travel to Palo Alto, Calif. to compete in the Stanford Invitational while the throwers and sprinters will head to Cedar Falls, Iowa to try their luck at the Northern Iowa Invitational.
