03.08.2008 | Track and Field
AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State track and field squads wrapped up their 2008 home indoor campaign on Saturday at the NCAA Qualifier in the Lied Recreational Center in Ames, and also ran at the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
The highlight of the weekend came by way of the provisional-qualification of ISU's distance medley relay team for the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. on March 14th and 15th. The quartet, consisting of Jayden Russ, Derron Montgomery, James Galvan and Hillary Bor, ran a 9:45.39 on Notre Dame's track at the Alex Wilson Invitational, finishing under the provisional-qualifying standard of 9:49.20. The Cyclone squad earned sixth in the race. Bor, running the anchor, attained and held the lead in the race until 500-meters to go.
Daniel Fadgen improved on his point-scoring performance in the mile run at the Big 12 Championships last weekend by achieving a career best in the event with a time of 4:08.27. The former Air Force Falcon placed fourth overall. Fadgen ended his day running another personal best in the 3,000-meter run, with a time of 8:34.71, taking second overall.
Tiffanie Synacek seized the highest finish of the day for the women. Synacek's height of 5-07.75 in the high jump tied for third in the event. In the throws events, freshman Luke Pinkelman, competing unattached, threw a personal record of 56-11.50 in the shot put, good enough for fifth place.
Along with the distance medley relay squad, Lisa Koll (5,000- and 3,000-meters), Galvan (800-meters), Grace Kemmey (5,000-meters) and Bor (mile) all stand qualified individually for the national meet. Koll's time of 15:52.37 in the 5,000-meter run is the second-fastest in the nation, and is an automatic-qualifiying time for the event. The rest of the Cyclone provisional qualifiers will find out if they earned trips to the national meet when the NCAA announces the bids on Monday.
