WICHITA, Kan. ? Wichita State took advantage of five Iowa State errors to defeat the Cyclones, 7-4, and halt their four-game win streak at the Shocker Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Ariel Coburn and Michelle Dettmer each homered for the Cyclones (16-4). Coburn finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and driven in. Jacquelyn Beatty and Dettmer had the other runs batted in for the Cyclones.
Charissa Carlin (6-3) struggled for the Cyclones, lasting just one inning and giving up four runs on five hits before giving way to Amie Ford. Ford pitched the remainder of the game and struck out six while allowing three runs, just one of which was earned.
Ashly Bright (8-5) got the win for the Shockers (14-7). The Missouri Valley Conference's leader in strikeouts kept the Cyclones guessing all afternoon, striking out 15.
The Shockers put two runs on the board in the first and second innings before Coburn cut into the lead with her fourth homer of the season, making it 4-1 Wichita State.
The Shockers would add two more in their half of the fourth as the Cyclones struggled in the field, committing a pair of errors that resulted in runs. Dettmer then led off the fifth inning with her first career home run, making it 6-2, but WSU again responded as Katie McGeeney singled to drive in Lindsie Mitts in the bottom of the inning.
Beatty doubled to score Coburn in the sixth and Coburn singled to score Courtney Wray in the seventh but it wouldn't be enough.
Iowa State will face South Dakota State and Wichita State again tomorrow at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
