Johnson?s Grand Slam Leads ISU Past Wichita State

WICHITA, Kan. ? Alex Johnson and Sydni Jones homered and Rachel Zabriskie tossed her fourth shutout of the season as Iowa State (18-4) avenged an earlier loss to Wichita State with an 8-0 win Sunday afternoon at the Shocker Invitational.
Johnson hit a two-out fifth inning grand slam to break open a tight game. It was her second homer of the season, both of which have been grand slams, and gave her a team-leading 22 runs batted in. Jones' homer, a two-run shot an inning later, scored Carrie Monroe and sealed the run-rule victory.
Zabriskie (8-1) got the win for the Cyclones, giving up just two hits to the Shockers (15-8) while striking out five.
The Cyclones were hitless the first two innings but got on the board in the third as Kelsey Kidwell and Courtney Wray had run-scoring singles to grab the 2-0 lead.
Wichita State pitcher Ashly Bright (7-6) retired the side in the fourth but the Cyclones got to her again in the fifth. Bright, who struck out 15 in Saturday's win over ISU, gave up a leadoff single to Jones. She then struck out Michelle Dettmer before walking Carleigh Berry. After retiring Kidwell on a fly out, Bright, who struck out four in the game, walked Wray before serving up the first-pitch grand slam to Johnson.
Monroe drew a walk from relief pitcher Brianna Smet to open the sixth. Jones then slugged her fourth homer of the season, a walk-off shot that hit the scoreboard, to give ISU the win.
Iowa State will return to action next weekend at the San Diego Classic. The Cyclones will open play Friday against Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
